Clifford Gonzales, Ph.D., CRNA

Dr. Clifford Gonzales arrived in North Carolina in 1994. His foundational knowledge in nursing is deeply rooted from obtaining his Bachelor’s degree at Saint Louis University at Baguio City, Philippines. With experience in cardiothoracic ICU, coronary care, and emergency nursing, he received his anesthesia education at Wake Forest Baptist Health, graduating in 2006. Upon graduation, he received the Chal Maree award for outstanding commitment to the profession of nurse anesthesia.

His career in education started as a clinical instructor for undergraduate nursing students in the Philippines. He rekindled his career in education after receiving his certification as a nurse anesthetist in the role of clinical instructor and adjunct lecturer. Additionally, he mentored students in scholarly writing. His contribution to education was not restricted to our program. He co-authored peer reviewed journals in the field of education and served as a contributor to the book, Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesiology.

His fervor for the blend of art and science in the field of anesthesia became the impetus to learn about research. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Nursing at University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2012. He received the AANA Foundation fellowship and the George and Beatrice Goldman Fisher awards for his dissertation.  An Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Gonzales is responsible for the clinical education program, including maintenance of clinical sites and experiences, simulation education, and maintaining accountability for student schedules and hours, while continuing to provide clinical education in our surgical suites.  He facilitates the research education for students.  He participates in inter-professional activities with Emergency Medicine Department and the Physician Assistant Program.
