Small Steps toward Healthier Eating for Older Adults

What we are studying

This research study will pilot the development of a program to help older adults who have at least some issues with their teeth or gums to work toward eating a healthier diet. For people who qualify, a study staff member will work with them one-on-one over a six month period to develop a plan on how to eat a healthier diet by making a series of small changes.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Ages 65-79
  • Living at home in the community

What is involved

  • All study visits will take place in the home. An initial interview will ask about the foods a participant eats and about health and dental history. Based on the answers provided
  • A study staff member will help develop a personalized plan of changes participants can make to improve their diet. This counseling will take place over 6 months. Participants will meet face-to-face with the staff member 6 times and speak over the phone 3 times. The first and last meetings will take about 90 minutes. The other 4 meetings will take about 30 minutes and the telephone calls will take about 20 minutes.

Compensation:

Participants will receive $20 at the end of the first interview, $10 for each of the four shorter meetings, and $40 for the final meeting. This will be a total of $100 if the entire study is completed.
