Screening for Fatty Acid Processing Gene Variants in Healthy Adults

What we are studying

We are screening potential subjects for the genes they carry at a gene involved with fat processing and we are screening for healthy individuals. People who pass the screening will be added to a database of genotyped healthy people who agree to be recontacted for future studies on healthy people.

Who we are studying

  • Men and Women
  • Races:
    • White
    • African American
  • All Ethnicities
  • Ages 21 - 65

Eligibility Criteria

  • Not diagnosed with a major disease; willing to be recontacted for future studies
  • Exclusions:
    • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Heart attack or vascular surgery within the last year
  • Heart disease
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • History of stroke or arthrosclerosis
  • Asthma
  • Joint disease or Multiple sclerosis
  • Gallbladder removed or gallbladder disease
  • Use of tobacco products for 6 months prior to joining study
  • Pregnancy
  • Fasting Triglycerides greater than 150
  • Blood Pressure greater than 130/90
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) equal to or greater than 30 or less than 19
  • Fasting glucose greater than 125mg/dL
  • Taking more than 100 mg asprin /day
  • Taking NSAIDS or oral corticosteroids
  • Taking monteleukast type of allergy medications.

What is involved

  • One consenting/screening visit
  • Blood collection
  • Measurement of weight
  • Height
  • Body fat percentage
  • Body Mass Index
  • Waist and hip circumference.
