Strength Training for Knee Arthritis (START)

What we are studying

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and the leading cause of disability among older adults. The START research study will study the effects of strenght training (high and low intensity) and a healthy living program on osteoarthritis.

Who we are studying

  • Men and Women
  • Races:
    • White
    • African American
    • Asian
    • American Indian or Alaska Native
    • Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
    • Other
  • All Ethnicities
  • Ages 55+

Eligibility Criteria

  • Not currently in an exercise program
  • Must be overweight - BMI (25-40.5)
  • Mild to moderate knee pain on most days of the week in at least one knee.

What is involved

  • Participants in the START study will be randomly assigned to either a strength training program or a program that provides healthy living classes on nutrition and many other health topics
  • Along with stretching exercises. All participants will receive a physical exam and knee x-rays at no cost.
