Study of the Effects of Weight Loss on Your Physical Function

What we are studying

The purpose of this research study is to compare a high intensity weight loss group to a moderate intensity weight loss group to determine which leads to greater improvements in physical function.

  • Races:
    • White
    • African American
    • Asian
    • American Indian or Alaska Native
    • Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
    • Other
  • All Ethnicities
  • Ages 65+

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must have a BMI ?35
  • No recent weight change (+/- 10 lbs in last 12 months)
  • Not on estrogen or testosterone replacement therapy
  • No cardiovascular disease event or unstable angina within the past 6 months
  • No previous gastric surgery

What is involved

  • Telephone screen
  • 3 screening visits that include: physical exam
  • Blood draw
  • Cognitive testing
  • Physical performance testing
  • DXA body composition scan
  • 6 month intervention includes diet and excercise visits weekly
