What we are studying
High triglyceride levels can add to the bad effect of known risk factors for heart disease and stroke such as high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure. Statins are a group of drugs used to lower cholesterol and have been shown to be effective in reducing heart attack and stroke. However, a significant number of people who receive statins continue to be at high risk because their triglyceride levels remain high. The STRENGTH study will examine whether taking the investigational treatment Epanova® (an omega-3 fatty acid capsule which can lower triglycerides) together with a statin reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke when compared to taking the statin with corn oil (also in capsule form).
