Study the effects of meditation on chronic low back pain

What we are studying

This study will examine how meditation impacts the experience of pain. We will also use MRI to see how meditation affects the brain. Importantly, there is no religious or spiritual emphasis with this type of meditation.

Who is Eligible

  • Genders:
    • Men
    • Women
  • Races:
    • White
    • African American
    • Asian
    • American Indian or Alaska Native
    • Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
    • Other
  • All Ethnicities
  • Ages 18 - 65

Eligibility Criteria

  • Chronic low back pain from nerve damage
  • Herniated disc
  • Disc degeneration...basically if you lift your leg up and it hurts
  • Then you may qualify.

What is involved

  • 1 telephone questionnaire
  • Up to 3 MRIs
  • And up to 8 meditation training sessions (they are 20 minutes each)
