Cancer Biology

The Department of Cancer Biology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is an interdisciplinary cancer research program. Our goal is to develop and encourage a core of innovative basic and translational scientists to intensively and exclusively focus on cancer research.

The objectives of the Cancer Biology training program are to train scholars and promote research in Cancer Biology in a highly personal atmosphere. The program is deliberately small to provide individual mentoring and teaching opportunities. As such, the program accepts up to 8 students each year. A highly motivated faculty body provides training. This approach provides a unique interdisciplinary training environment without losing focus on the cancer problem.

Our research includes cellular damage and metabolism, cell growth and survival, cancer prevention and drug discovery and development.

The department offers a:

 Highlights of Our Programs

  • We provide a sound and complete exposure to the fundamentals of molecular biology and molecular genetics, and offer courses such as molecular carcinogenesis, cancer cell biology and molecular targets of cancer therapy. Read a message from our chair, Frank Torti, MD, for more on the history and goals of our program.
  • Faculty/student interaction and collaboration is a critical part of our program. Our primary faculty and co-faculty are a core attraction for graduate students to the program.
  • At Wake Forest, you have the opportunity to interface with some of the most exciting developments in cancer biology and cancer research. Learn more about our research.
