Student-Centered Applied Learning Environment
Wake Forest School of Medicine was an early developer of specialized classrooms to increase student participation in active learning, team-based learning, problem solving and peer-to-peer learning.
The Student-Centered Applied Learning Environment (SCALE) greatly improves active learning in clinical reasoning activities required for a variety of medical professions and specialties. The SCALE classroom features:
- Multiple small group tables, each with wireless connectivity and display capabilities,
- Online, web-based audience response capabilities,
- Multiple room display screens and facilities for patient presentation and faculty interaction.
The room shifts learners from the passive role found in a typical lecture hall environment to active engagement with expert faculty and patients through team-based learning and problem solving with large group interaction.
This Center for Applied Learning resource is an ideal environment for developing practitioner capacities required for clinical decision-making and interdisciplinary team task loading.
