CenteringPregnancy
CenteringPregnancy is an innovative approach to prenatal care with the potential to improve pregnancy outcomes. Centering is a group model of care. Women are joined together with other women due around the same time; they receive and participate in assessment, support, and education in one space. Privacy is respected and sensitive issues are addressed separately. Women are engaged in a number of topics related to pregnancy such as nutrition and healthly choices in pregnancy, setting personal goals, prenatal tests, common discomforts, breastfeeding, relaxation, labor and birth, newborn care, emotional health, family dynamics, and contraception for postpartum. Group dates are known in advance, meet as ofter as prenatal visits, and last about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. (See brochure.)
Studies have shown, that among women who participate in group regularly, there is a 33% - 41% reduction in premature birth as compared to women in traditional care. In addition, women have been shown to be more likely to breastfeed, and have enhance readiness for mother hood.
Currently in the United States, there are more than 700 sites offering CenteringPregnancy, and this number is growing steadily. The Downtown Health Plaza recently received recognition in June 2012 as an official site by the Centering Health Institute.
