BCLS Information

All AHA courses are to be taught using the new science (2005 AHA Guidelines), including all Healthcare Provider, Heartsaver and Family & Friends courses. Use AHA Instructor Network to strengthen your BLS teaching knowledge.

Heartsaver Reminder

The 2006 Heartsaver courses introduce the concept of competency tests. These formal skill tests are done during designated testing lessons in each of the Heartsaver courses. The skills testing checklists are located on the HS Instructor CD.

In Heartsaver courses that include CPR and AED modules only, there are no written tests.

For Heartsaver First Aid and Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid, there are a series of short written tests included in the student workbook, but it is not required that you score these tests on the roster; however, you are encouraged to follow up with students to clarify questions/concerns.

The new testing model is discussed on pages 17 and 18 of the new Heartsaver Instructor Manual, with additional information in the “Course- Specific details” section for each course.

HEARTSAVER INSTRUCTOR CD

All Heartsaver Course Workbooks, answer keys, course agendas, updated child safety tip sheets, etc. can be found on the Heartsaver Instructor CD found in the Heartsaver Instructor manual.

Heartsaver First Aid Instructor Course

Effective July 1, 2006 Heartsaver First Aid will fall under the BCLS umbrella. If you are interested in teaching Heartsaver First Aid you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You must be an active BCLS Instructor.
  • You will need to purchase the Heartsaver First Aid Guidelines, the Heartsaver Instructor Manual and Heartsaver First Aid Student Manual.

AED USAGE UNDER 2006 GUIDELINES

AED instruction must be included in Healthcare Provider and Heartsaver Courses of all types. This means you must teach how to use the device, and then have students provide return demonstrations. For Family & Friends courses, instructors must provide instruction on the device and students demonstrate as needed.
