JDRF is the worldwide leader in funding research to cure type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly and lasts a lifetime. JDRF sets the global agenda for diabetes research and is the largest charitable funder of and advocate for diabetes science worldwide.
Nearly 3 million people across the US have type 1 diabetes. That’s more than twice the population of the 12-county Piedmont Triad region. Just as sobering is the fact that each year more than 15,000 children are diagnosed with type 1 in the US. That’s 40 kids every single day.
To help in the quest to find a cure for type 1 diabetes, the Piedmont Triad Chapter was founded in 1994, and hosted its first events—Walks to Cure Diabetes in both Winston-Salem and Greensboro—in 1995. In addition to the Winston-Salem and Greensboro Walks, the chapter now hosts Walks in High Point, Burlington and Asheboro. Each year, over 4,000 people participate in these four Walks, which together raise over $1 million for important diabetes research.
