About Surgical Oncology
Surgical Oncology uses surgery to treat cancer. A surgical oncologist is a surgeon who specializes in removing tumors while still preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
All of our surgical oncologists usually have additional training in certain specific types of cancer. Sub-specializing in focused types of cancer surgery increases their expertise and can significantly improve a patient’s outcome.
Cancer Surgical Specialties
At Wake Forest Baptist, our surgical specialties include:
If your medical team recommends surgery, there is a good chance that it will be just one part of your cancer treatment plan. We routinely work with specialists in other areas to support an individualized, comprehensive plan of care. At Wake Forest, we also provide patient and family support during treatment.
The surgical oncology service also makes state of the art research and clinical trials available to our patients for as many different types of cancer as possible. You may have the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial as a patient. Clinical trials offer access to new medications or innovative surgical techniques. While patients are welcome to participate in research trials, they are never required to do so.
