Brain Tumor
Chemotherapy
Will I need chemotherapy to treat my brain tumor?
Chemotherapy treatment involves taking strong drugs to kill cancer cells throughout your body. You can take chemotherapy either through oral pills or through injections that deliver the medication into your bloodstream.
Brain tumor chemotherapy can be delivered in 2 different ways:
- Neo-adjuvant – This is chemotherapy delivered as the first line of treatment to help shrink the size of the tumor, and in preparation for any additional treatments.
- Adjuvant – This is chemotherapy delivered after surgery or other treatments to help kill cancer cells.
Chemotherapy at Wake Forest
Our team at the Comprehensive Cancer Center recommends chemotherapy for newly diagnosed patients, especially following surgery, to reduce the size of the tumor. We also recommend chemotherapy in conjunction with radiation therapy.
For patients with a cancer recurrence, we generally recommend chemotherapy treatment alone. To give you the most advanced treatment options, we offer standard chemotherapy drugs, as well as investigational drugs through clinical trials.
At the center of every decision we make about your brain tumor chemotherapy treatment are your needs, opinion, and input. Together, we develop a plan that is not only the most effective, but also that feels right for you and your family.
