Prostate Cancer Vaccine

If you have advanced prostate cancer, you now have a new treatment option. Provenge® is a new advanced cancer treatment for prostate cancer and works differently than hormone therapy or chemotherapy.

Provenge is the first FDA-approved autologous cellular immunotherapy that stimulates a patient’s immune system to target and attack prostate cancer. The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest Baptist Health is one of the first centers in the country to offer this advanced treatment.

What is Provenge?

Provenge is the first autologous (related to yourself; belonging to the same organism it is being used to treat) cellular immunotherapy; it is designed to use cells from a patient’s own immune system—the body’s natural defense against disease—to identify and target prostate cancer. Provenge may help certain men with advanced prostate cancer live longer.

How is Provenge given?

Your doctor will give you 3 doses of Provenge approximately 2 weeks apart. The treatment is given through your vein.

I’ve heard that Provenge is very expensive. How will I pay for it?

The good news is that Medicare has approved full payment for Provenge. Our medical billing office can help you with any insurance claims.
