Managing Conflict of Interest

Research COI Management

Requirements set forth in 42 CFR, Part 50, Subpart F and 45 CFR, Part 94 and other state regulations serve as the basis for the WFBMC policy and protect the credibility and integrity of the medical center's faculty, staff and students so that public trust and confidence in its activities are ensured.  Managing conflicts of interest in research involves formal establishment of systems which ensure that objectivity and high ethical standards are maintained at all times.

Subrecipient COI Management

Subrecipient institutions will be expected to elect in the subcontract that their investigator(s) will comply with their own policy or the policy of WFBMC and to certify that requirements in the subcontract will be met.

Industry COI Management

Managing conflicts of interest in educational activities that are sponsored by industry is generally achieved by complying with ACCME Standards for Commercial Support of CME, whether or not CE credit is awarded for attendance. Managing conflicts of interest for faculty speaking engagements is focused on the prohibition of promotional speaking designed to influence purchasing or prescribing of vendor products.

Institutional COI Management

Managing institutional conflicts of interest are generally maintained within the standard procedures of medical center operations and are based on the institution's Code of Conduct, but institutional conflicts of interest involving research may need oversight by independent committees or consultants outside the institution to maintain objectivity.
