Tips for Better Presentations

Basic Tips for Better Presentations

General Guidelines

  • Plan your presentation using an outline format.
  • Do not use animation that distract from the presentation content.
  • Be brief. Do not show all the text you will speak.
  • Pages should contain no more than eight bullet points.
  • Consider your audience's knowledge and interest in the subject and adjust your presentation accordingly.
  • Summarize the main points at the end of your presentation.

Using the PowerPoint Presentation Template

The PowerPoint template was designed for optimal effectiveness. Consistent treatment of like information is essential to reading comprehension. Repetition is used as a unifying element to organize and clarify your message. Use the following tips to maintain the integrity of the template.

PowerPoint Template Guidelines

  • There are multiple Master pages in the template. Click on the layout button to select alternate cover slide photos.
  • Use Divider pages to separate sections of your content.
  • Headlines may be either blue or orange, but must be consistent throughout.
  • Headlines should be 32 point type, flush left and start at the same place on every page.
  • Use consistent headline case—either all “Sentence case” or all “Title Case”
  • Body copy may be blue, orange or black, but must be the same color and size throughout.
  • Bulleted body copy should be the same size and color as other body copy.
  • Do not “Bold” all body copy; use only for emphasis.
  • Use “Underlining” only for Web addresses.
  • Use “Italics” sparingly—only for occasional emphasis or the name of a publication.
  • If using quotes or other call-out text, the color and size should be the same throughout.
  • For readability, use “Format > Paragraph” to control both paragraph and line spacing.
  • Do not use cartoons or clip art; photography is preferred.
  • Do not “borrow” copyrighted web graphics or photos.
  • Graphics should enhance and support the text, and are not needed on all slides.
