Speech Pathology Student Internships

Wake Forest Baptist offers a variety of student internship opportunities in speech pathology.

Available Internships

Acute (Inpatient) Adult

Patients are adults (18+) with swallowing, communication, and cognitive disorders.  Swallowing disorders are most prevalent. Trachs and vents are frequent.  FEES, PFS/MBS, and PMV evaluations are performed frequently. No LSVT. EMST and IOPI are intermittently utilized. NMES is infrequent. Intermittent interdisciplinary team attendance.

Suggested Coursework: Dysphagia, Neuro, Communication/Language Disorders, Trachs/Vents

Inpatient Rehab (Sticht Center) Adult

Patients are adults (13+) with swallowing, communication and cognitive disorders.  Communication, and cognitive disorders are most prevalent, with swallowing as a close second. Trachs are infrequent, no vents.  FEES, PFS/MBS, and PMV evaluations are performed infrequently. No LSVT. NMES and IOPI utilized on a fairly regular basis. EMST  is infrequently utilized. Regular interdisciplinary team attendance.

Suggested Coursework: Aphasia, Neuro, Communication/Language Disorders

Outpatient Adult

Patients are adults (16+) with swallowing, communication, cognitive and voice disorders.  All disorders are of equal prevalence. Trachs are infrequent, no vents.  FEES, PMV and PFS evaluations may be performed, no MBS.  LSVT evaluations and therapy is performed. VitalStim is utilized on a fairly regular basis. Lingual manometry and sEMG are frequently utilized.

Inpatient Pediatrics

Patients are pediatrics (0-18) with swallowing/feeding, communication, and cognitive disorders.  Feeding disorders are most prevalent. Trachs and vents are frequent.  FEES, PFS/MBS, and PMV evaluations are performed frequently.  No LSVT. Infrequent NMES, EMST, and IOPI. Regular interdisciplinary team attendance..

Outpatient Pediatrics

Patients are pediatrics (0-18) with swallowing/feeding, communication and cognitive disorders. Feeding and communication disorders are most frequent. Trachs are infrequent, no vents. No FEES, PFS/MBS, and PMV. No LSVT. VitalStim is infrequent. No EMST and IOPI/tongue bulb. Outpatient PFS/MBS, Kids Eat, Cochlear Implant are seen by the inpatient pediatric speech-language pathologists. Cleft palate seen and nasopharyngoscopy performed by Sarah Reid.

Suggested coursework: Communication/Language Disorders in Peds, Language development, Articulation/Phonology disorders

Application Acceptance Dates

  • Fall Semester: August 1-31, the year prior
  • Spring Semester: January 1-31, the year prior
  • Summer Semester: May 1-31, the year prior

(Applications will not be accepted outside of these date ranges)

Notification of Acceptance to Position Dates

  • Fall Semester: October 31, the year prior
  • Spring Semester: March 31, the year prior
  • Summer semester: July 31, the year prior

(If date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, notification will be the following weekday)

Interviews via telephone or in person may be scheduled during the application review process, with specific content questions to be included.
