- Central Utility Services
The department provides services for over 4.0 million square feet throughout the Medical Center complex, plus 2.5 million square feet of parking deck space 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. In addition, Engineering personnel are responsible for the Life Safety Systems throughout the campus and responsible for compliance in many areas of The Joint Commission (TJC) Environment of Care.
Maintenance personnel consist of Electricians, Mechanics, Decorators, AC/R Mechanics, Carpenters, Utility Workers and various management personnel. These key people take care of the mechanical operating systems, such as plumbing, electrical, fire alarms, paging systems, cable television systems and many others, throughout the facility. Personnel also take care of such tasks as painting and wallpapering. All Medical Center buildings are divided into zones which allows our personnel to focus their attention on particular buildings and specialize on equipment located in their specific areas.
Engineering includes a group of Customer Service personnel who are the point of contact for all calls from customers, whether you have problems with plumbing, lighting or heating. Each month, the maintenance staff completes approximately 7,500 work requests. This includes corrective and preventive maintenance issues that are scheduled to keep equipment and systems running smoothly and reliably. It is our goal to respond to all calls regarding patient rooms within 30 minutes, no matter the time of day or night.
Central Utility Services consists of the Power Plant Operations as well as procurement and distribution of electrical power and water. WFUBMC operates its own Power Plant to generate chilled water and steam for the entire campus. Controls Technicians and Power Plant Operators continuously monitor the equipment to ensure that all systems are at peak performance throughout each building. Power Plant Operators also maintain emergency generators that supply the facility with electrical service in the event of a Duke Power Company system failure.
The Grounds Team of Engineering is responsible for the maintenance and beautification of the hospital grounds. Their duties include everything from planting the flowers that enhance our entrances to mowing the lawns and trimming trees. This group installs a major portion of the Christmas lighting around the campus and is responsible for snow/ice removal during harsh winter weather.
