Question: What brought you to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center?

Answer: My husband and I wanted to get back to North Carolina because we loved our four years here for residency and fellowships. Dr. Coates offered me a position which allowed me to continue to practice obstetrics and teach residents - things I'm very fond of.

Q: What are your clinical specialties?

A: My specialties are adolescent medicine, obstetrics, family medicine, women's health and newborn medicine.

Q: What is your patient care philosophy?

A: Don't forget to laugh. I think humor is key to healing and better health. I feel I let patients down if they don't have a smile on their face at some point in their visit.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working with patients?

A: The most rewarding aspect for me is when patients really take control of their medical problem with only encouragement from me and no medication. I also enjoy being the first to see and hold a newborn during delivery and then watching a new mom shed tears of joy over her baby.

Q: What type of volunteer or community activities are you involved in?

A: Right now my children, ages 4 and almost 2, take up most of my free time. I work at our Southside Health and Wellness Clinic once a week, and in the past I've helped at the Community Care Center (Centro Clinico) and gone on medical missions to Honduras and Guatemala. I also try to participate at social functions at my church, St. Leo the Great.

Q: What fun facts should we know about you?

I love to eat Vietnamese food (my husband is Vietnamese). I enjoy gardening, especially flowers. I'm also "green" - so much so that colleagues and residents make fun of me for reminding them to recycle, double-side their photocopies, turn off lights, etc. Our nurses laugh when I pick plastic bottles out of the trash to recycle. The chief residents two years ago bought me a "Wake Forest Tree Hugger" shirt.
