John Shields, MD was really nice. He explained everything to me so that I could understand what was needed for my care. He showed and explained the x-rays to me. I would recommend him to anyone that is in need of knee or hip replacement. I had to be referred to a sports ortho surgeon. I totally trust his judgement in who to send me to. He had the appointment made when I left the office.

8/23/2015

Dr. Sheilds is an excellent surgeon, and was the 2nd opinion I sought concerning hip surgery. He gave me information about pre-surgery and his techniques I hadn't received from the first care provider. I never felt rushed, and he's an exterely positive person. I would return to him without question. I initially expressed a desire to improve my hip because I 'couldn't run... away or to something...or jog a half-block with my dog.' What I heard him say pre-surgery was that high-impact activities-post surgery were discouraged. He explained about the unnecessary wear and tear high impact activities would place on the prosthesis. He probably included the word 'running' in the sentence. I finally heard at my 6 week checkup "No, you can't run." "Not ever?" "No... you can walk your dog..use the elliptical..." etc. It's a small point, and I'd have had the surgery anyway, and it's likely my hearing problem, but as with students or children, maybe he could consider "No, you should not run after surgery, not ever." It's a small thing, but dense folk like me sometimes need that!
