Job Description

SHIFT: 3p-11p with every 3rd weekend rotation

BSN referred with minimum of 2 yrs experience in psychiaty/behavioral health. NC active nursing license required. Able to provide strong leadership in coordination of nursing care in collaboration with the nurse manager. This includes monitoring staffing, safety, regulatory compliance along with input into staff performance.

The Adult Behavior Health is a 24 bed unit with 8 private rooms and 3 semiprivate rooms. We have a minimum of 4/5 nurses during the day with 1-2 techs. Two nurses participate with our Physicians in rounds or at team meeting during the hours of 8a-10a. The unit is separated into two nursing areas with staff on both sides. You role will include assisting with ADL's, conducting group programming for two distinct populations, admit and discharge patients and monitor visitors between the time of 4p-8pm. We manage bed assignments for our own patients; therefore there are many transfers of patients within the unit requiring patient orientation to their new surroundings and transferring their belongings, meds and charts. Our nurses complete safety rounds Q 15 minutes and cover the Mental Health Tech assignment by dispensing their assigned patients meds, read, and cosign their notes. Nurses cover their own patients when they are on 1:1 and do not have the assistance of the hospital sitter pool. Presently on most days RN's are at a 1:5 patient ratio. There are numerous admissions during the evening hours and a high concentration during the 7p-11p. Most admissions are not scheduled and are coming from mainly the ED or discharge from the hospital and readmitted to Adult Behavioral Health Unit.

You will be joining an experienced nursing team with 85% of our RN staff BSN prepared nurses and about 15% certified in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing. Most of the RN staff years of service is between 10-35 years with a combination of psychiatric and medical surgical skills. Turnover is due to staff going back to school (graduated from NP program) and retirement.
