Advanced Practitioner NP/PA III
NEURO AND CARDIOTHORACIC INTENSIVE CARE UNITS
The Critical Care Advanced Practitioner (PA or NP) (CC-AP) is responsible for patient care in the Neurointensive Care Unit and/or Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit.
In both the Neurointensive Care Unit and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care Unit the CC-AP manages patients under the supervision of our board-certified intensivists. Patients are managed in collaboration with neurosurgeons and cardiac surgeons, neurologists, cardiologists, nurses, respiratory therapists and other medical personnel. Responsibilities include assessment and management of common neurocritical care and postoperative problems, coordination of clinical care, documentation of care provided, teaching and counseling patients and families, preparing patients and families for discharge from the critical care setting, and serving as a resource for nursing staff and other healthcare professionals.
The CC-AP plays a key role in providing an efficient and cost effective course of treatment and/or hospitalization including an appropriate length of stay for our critically ill patients. The CC-AP utilizes specialty expertise and management principles to ensure timely and appropriate delivery of nursing care in accordance with medical center mission and values, policies/procedures and internal and external regulations. Careis based on patient-family/environmental variable including age, developmental level and cognitive ability.
The NP/PA functions in an expanded role within the scope of practice approved by the Medical Staff (Privileges) and protocols (Critical Care Intensivists) to provide care that is appropriate for age, medical diagnosis and standards of care using necessary assessment skills, diagnostic tools, medications and therapeutic interventions. The NP/PA coordinates care through communication and collaboration with patient, family/significant others, members of the interdisciplinary care team and other appropriate individuals or agencies.
