Surgical Oncology NP/PA– Job Description – October 2013
This position is expected to allow surgeons to increase case volume. The Surgical Oncology NP/PA) serves as a physician extender. The SO-NP/PA is responsible for providing comprehensive surgical care to Surgical Oncology Service patients. Focus will be on critical pathways for index cases and coordination/orientation of discharge planning for complex surgical oncology cases.
100% patient care inclusive of documentation and education for hospital staff, patient family care needs while in hospital, out patient clinic&'' patient care and triage service.
The SO-NP/PA is responsible for identifying and implementing opportunities to support and improve the quality of care provided to adult Surgical Oncology Service patients across the continuum of care. The SO-NP/PA ensures an efficient and cost effective course of treatment and/or hospitalization including an appropriate length of stay. The SO-ML utilizes specialty expertise and management principals to ensure timely and appropriate delivery of care in accordance with WFUBMC mission and values, NCBH policies / procedures and internal and external regulations. Care is based on patient/family/environmental variable including age, developmental level and cognitive ability.
The SO-NP/PA functions in an expanded role within the scope of practice approved by the Medical Staff (Privileges) and Critical Pathways defined by the Surgical Oncology faculty to provide care that is appropriate for age, medical diagnosis and standards of care using necessary assessment skills, diagnostic tools, medications and therapeutic interventions. Coordinates care through communication and collaboration with patient, family/significant others, members of the interdisciplinary care team and other appropriate individuals or agencies. Serve as a resource to other healthcare professionals, support staff and students. Performance of and supervision of house officers performing bedside procedures consistent with medical center practice guidelines is anticipated.
The SO-NP/PA will provide care to hospitalized patients. Care includes participation in the admissions process to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, and participating in the discharging of hospital patients from the hospital. Initiates, monitors, alters, and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic interventions consistent with the patient''s medical condition and level of acuity. Re-evaluates the patients throughout the hospital stay and modifies the plan of care as needed in collaboration with the house staff and faculty physicians. Assists with orders and participates in the discharge summary process to expedite early morning discharges. Arranges for appropriate follow-up care, provides detailed documentation of the hospital course of treatment in the outpatient record. Maintain patient care continuity and follows clinical pathways for index procedures agreed upon by the supervising faculty physicians.
