NEURO INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
- Graduation from an accredited nurse practitioner program.
- Licensed as nurse practitioner by the State of North Carolina (NC Board of Nursing and NC Board of Medical Examiners.
- One year of experience in speciality or three years of similar level work as a nurse practitioner.
- Ability to perform complex patient diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
The NP/PA in the Neuro ICU manages neuroscience patients in the Neuro ICU under the supervision of our Neuro ICU intensivists. They manage patients in collaboration with neurointensivists, surgeons, anesthesiologists/critical care attendings, neurologists, nurses, respiratory therapists and other medical personnel. Responsibilities include physical assessment, management of common neurocritical care and postoperative problems, coordination of clinical care, documentation of care provided, teaching and counseling patients and families, and serving as a resource for nursing staff, preparing patients and families for discharge from the critical care setting. The NP/PA also provides patients and families with primary care support to facilitate overall health promotion for clients cared for by the neuro surgery and critical care intensive teams.
The NP/PA functions in an expanded role within the scope of practice approved by the Medical Staff (Privileges) and protocols (Critical Care Intensivists) to provide care that is appropriate for age, medical diagnosis and standards of care using necessary assessment skills, diagnostic tools, medications and therapeutic interventions. The NP/PA coordinates care through communication and collaboration with patient, family/significant others, members of the interdisciplinary care team and other appropriate individuals or agencies. The NP/PA serves as a resource to other healthcare professionals, support staff and students.
