Innovation-Entrepreneurship

Full-time regular, 40 hours/week

1. Actively engages faculty and teams at various levels of the academic and clinical enterprise (e.g., project teams, departments & Chairs, Center members and Directors as well as senior leaders of Institutes) to identify, develop, and fund projects leading to innovative products, research services, and intellectual property.

2. Critically assesses research projects to conceptualize and prioritize opportunities for innovative products and services. Candidate must utilize scientific and business expertise to collaborate with faculty in guiding translational research from ideation phase through proof of concept testing, prototyping, and development to stage of readiness for commercialization.

3. Participates in the formation and leadership of project teams to advance translational research projects that develop commercially valuable innovations and services.

4. Identifies internal and external scientific resources necessary for the development of therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices and other products or services. Facilitates obtaining access to these resources and integrating them with translational research teams.

4. Maintains a high level of knowledge of scientific literature and progress in relevant areas within the local research ecosystem and globally.

5. Evaluates ideas, inventions, and innovations for potential patentability. Utilizes scientific expertise and knowledge of patent process to contribute strategically and tactically to the development of intellectual property.

5. Performs feasibility, industry, market, and competitive analysis as required to evaluate both internal and external opportunities. Integrates scientific and business expertise to prepare in-depth cases for the entrepreneurial and commercial development of innovations and research services.

6. Contributes to the management of internal funding of translational research leading to the creation and development of innovations. Specific activities include participation in the formulation of requests for proposals, supervision of peer review, evaluation and prioritization of applications against scientific criteria and institutional goals, regular assessment of progress, and interaction with awardees to facilitate the accomplishment of project milestones.

7. Interacts closely with the commercialization and business development groups to advance licensable intellectual property, innovations, and services, prioritize projects, and evaluate and develop strategies, documents and presentations for commercial partnering and start-up opportunities.

8. Interacts with scientific business services and marketing groups to provide and evaluate sophisticated scientific content essential for effective marketing materials and programming.

Job Summary: Scientist/entrepreneur that engages, facilitates, promotes and supports the identification and development of innovative products, intellectual property, and research services.

Education / Experience: Bachelors degree in a scientific, medical, or engineering field is required. A graduate degree in business or law is advantageous. A minimum of 3 years of experience is required and 5 years is preferred. Experience may include advanced postdoctoral research and/or professional experience in pharmaceutical, biomedical, or engineering research and development, business development, entrepreneurial development, consulting, or the equivalent. A working knowledge of translational research in biomedicine, chemistry, engineering, and/or nanotechnology, and of product innovation and product development is essential.

Skills and Qualifications:

Motivation and ability to translate research into innovative products and services; passion to create solutions that positively impact health care.
Creativity ? ability to think beyond convention, to link scientific discoveries, unmet medical needs, and insights to facilitate the creation of innovations.
Demonstrated experience in carrying out advanced research in biomedicine, chemistry, engineering, nanotechnology and/or other relevant discipline. Should include a capacity for original, independent thinking documented by a strong track record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and/or invention of patentable intellectual property.
Specific domain expertise in one or more area of biomedicine, biotechnology, physics, chemistry, or nanotechnology, approximately equivalent to that expected for a principal investigator of a research project.
Deep knowledge of scientific research and development pathways that lead to commercially valuable products and services in one or more relevant area including: drug discovery, biological therapeutics, diagnostics, imaging, biomedical engineering, medical devices, chemistry, information technology, nanotechnology
Ability to build working relationships internally and externally with other scientists and the scientific community and to contribute strongly to multi-disciplinary research and development teams. Facilitation of teams to conduct research, to synthesize data, to ideate and problem solve
Knowledge of entrepreneurship with experience in feasibility analysis and development of business plans and cases
Strategic thinking ? ability to link research findings with market needs and health care trends to identify compelling visions and opportunities for innovations
Business acumen ? ability to integrate scientific knowledge with an understanding of sound business fundamentals and a pragmatic knowledge of product and service development
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Working knowledge of processes and laws governing the protection of intellectual property is a plus
