Immigration Steps

This list is not comprehensive, but it outlines some of the steps you will need to complete in order to successfully obtain your visa stamp. This section is for J-1 initial scholars who are not currently in the US and will be attending an institution in the US under the J-1 visa category. 

Step 1: Visit the J-1 Scholars home page, and read through all information in the 'Before You Arrive' category before beginning the immigration process.

Step 2: Provide evidence that you meet the English language proficiency requirement.

Step 3: Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee. Payments may be made only at ICE.

Step 4: Check the J-1 visa application requirements mandated by the US Embassy/Consulate nearest you by phone or Internet. Visit US Embassy.gov.

Step 5: Gather visa application, visa application fee, receipt of I-901 fee payment, Form DS-2019, and all other associated documents necessary for J-1 visa stamp.

Step 6: Schedule an appointment at the nearest US Embassy/Consulate.

Step 7: Book flight/make travel plans.

Step 8: Arrive at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Step 9: Check in with the Office of International Services. Please bring the following documents:

  • Passport
  • J-1 visa stamp (in passport, with the exception of Canadian scholars)
  • Form DS-2019
  • Proof of health insurance
