Re-entry After a Temporary Absence

You need three items to re-enter the US after a temporary absence:

  • Passport that is valid for at least 6 months into the future
  • Valid visa stamp (exception Canadian scholars and for travel to Canada/Mexico/Caribbean Islands under Automatic Visa Revalidation clause)
  • Form DS-2019 that has been validated for travel with a signature from a representative with the Office of International Services

Please check your documents at the time of entry in order to make sure you have been given the proper stamps. CBP inspectors sometimes make mistakes when processing people into the US.

Packing Tip

Please also be sure to never pack your documents in your checked luggage; please always carry them on your person.

General Guidelines

All visitors entering the US must state their reason for entering the country. You will also be asked to provide information about your final destination. It is important to tell the CBP officer that you will be a scholar. Be prepared to include the name and address of the school you will be attending.

It may seem daunting to speak to a Customs and Border Patrol agent, but don’t be nervous. It is best to simply answer any questions honestly but briefly.

Visa Requirements for Other Countries

Many scholars decide to travel to nearby countries while they are studying in the US. Depending on your country of citizenship, you may be required to obtain an entry visa to enter some of the surrounding countries.

Be sure to check with that country’s embassy/consulate prior to departure.
