Transportation

Arriving in North Carolina/International Travel

Greensboro Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO): We strongly recommend booking tickets to Greensboro rather than cities such as Charlotte or Raleigh/Durham. While flights to Charlotte and Raleigh/Durham may be less expensive, keep in mind both of these cities are located approximately two hours away from Winston-Salem. Therefore, the total amount you spend on transportation could be higher if you choose one of these options.

Area Transportation

PART Shuttle: The PART shuttle is a public transportation shuttle that offers service to numerous areas between Greensboro and Winston-Salem. It offers a shuttle that runs from the Winston-Salem central bus station to the Greensboro PTI Airport for a nominal price. Be aware, however, that the route is quite complex and requires you to change buses as well as maneuver your baggage. We recommend using the PART shuttle once you have settled into Winston-Salem and are traveling with little or no baggage. More information can be found on the PART website

Zipcar: WFU has contracted with zipcar to provide energy efficient cars available for extremely affordable rental rates, hourly and daily. For more information, visit www.zipcar.com/wfu

Local Cab Companies: There are numerous local cab companies that can help you to get around at your leisure. Reliable companies include Willards Cab and Yellow Cab/Classic Cab.

Transportation for US Travel

Planes: Travel by air is one of the easiest options to explore the rest of the US. However, it is not always the cheapest option. Inexpensive flights to destinations across the US can sometimes be found on www.kayak.com

Trains: Scholars often want to go to nearby locations such as Washington, DC or New York. We recommend looking into the train as an alternative to flying. The Amtrak train offers trains to various locations across the US; however, we mainly recommend it for travel to Washington, DC. Destinations further away can be as expensive or more expensive than flying, so be sure to check the prices of airfare as well as buses when planning a trip. Information on the Amtrak train can be found at www.amtrak.com

Buses: Bus travel may be a good option for locations such as New York; Charleston; or Washington, DC. Traveling by bus, while the most time-consuming option, can often be the least expensive option. We recommend using reputable companies such as Greyhound (www.greyhound.com). We do not recommend companies that offer extremely low fares. Often these companies overwork their drivers and have high accident rates as a result. If the price seems too good to be true, it is best to avoid this option.

Rental Cars: While the Zipcar can be rented for hourly/daily rates, there may be times when you’d like to take a weekend or week-long trip with friends and you’d like the convenience of renting a car. We recommend using the Enterprise located on University Parkway (near the Wake Forest University athletic stadiums), as they offer a discount for Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center community members.
