Travel Destinations

Following are descriptions of notable travel destinations within North Carolina and the greater United States. 


North Carolina  

Tanglewood Park: Located just 20 minutes from Winston-Salem, Tanglewood Park is one of the largest state parks in NC. It holds tennis courts, a swimming pool, numerous lakes, hiking and biking trails, and much more. Visit Tanglewood Park.  

Biltmore Estate: George Vanderbilt created Biltmore as an escape from everyday life. A visit to the 8,000-acre estate in the mountains of Asheville, NC, provides limitless fun. The Biltmore estate is the single largest privately owned home in the United States and is worth the 2.5-hour drive to Asheville. Visit Biltmore.   


Greater United States

Charleston, South Carolina: Charleston is the second largest city in SC, and provides a showcase of southern charm and hospitality. The city is eclectic, historic, charming, and right on the coast. Visit Charleston.

New Orleans, Louisiana:  New Orleans, located deep in the South, is renowned for its Cajun style food, blues music and unique blend of southern American and French culture. It’s also known for Mardi Gras, one of the biggest celebrations held in the US each year.  Visit New Orleans.

Washington, DC: The nation’s capital is one of the most attractive destinations for international students and scholars. With historic monuments, international cuisine, shopping and nightlife, it’s easy to understand why millions flock to the city each year. Washington, DC, is only a 5 1/2-hour drive from Winston-Salem. Visit Washington.

New York, New York: Called the city that never sleeps, New York is considered one of the most exciting places to visit in the US. The city is known for 24-hour access to food, music and culture, and has one of the nation’s highest rates of tourism.  Visit New York.

Las Vegas, Nevada: Las Vegas is an internationally renowned resort city known primarily for gambling, shows, shopping, fine dining, and nightlife. The city bills itself as The Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its casino-hotels and associated entertainment. Las Vegas is one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
