Job Summary:

Provides interpreter services for Hispanic/Latino patients. Performs duties and conducts interpersonal relationships in a manner designed to project a positive image of the department and hospital. Insures that all contact with patients, the public, physicians and other hospital staff is carried out in a friendly, courteous, helpful and considerate manner. Works with others in the department to promote a harmonious work environment. Assist in the outreach efforts of the hospital in the Hispanic/Latino community.

This a PRN position to work the After Hours Clinic at Downtown Health Plaza, hours available are M - F 5pm - 8pm, Sat 9am - 1pm, Sun 1pm - 5pm


BA or BS degree in Spanish preferred or graduation from high school and one year of experience in a health care or human services setting with demonstrated fluency in Spanish.


Work experience in providing Spanish interpreter services preferable in a hospital environment.

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration:

Demonstrated interpreter competencies: North Carolina and National Interpreter certification preferred; obtaining passing status on competency examination.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Considerable proficiency of Spanish in both written and oral form.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, problem solving and communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret a wide range of information.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals in both languages.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Primary Accountabilities:

Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.

  • Assuming responsibility for keeping informed about changes in policies and procedures.

Provides interpreter services for Hispanic/Latino patients.

  • Interpreting communications from Hispanic/Latino patients and Downtown Health Plaza (DHP) personnel.
  • Interpreting communication from DHP personnel to Hispanic/Latino patients.
  • Providing accurate interpretation between Hispanic/Latino patients and DHP personnel.
  • Providing education of Hispanic/Latino patients' culture to DHP personnel to provide accurate and thorough interpretation/translation services.

Promotes “caring” image of the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC) and DHP.

  • Smiling, giving appropriate eye contact, calling patients by name, touching in a caring way when appropriate.
  • Responding calmly when others may be emotional.

Assisting in outreach efforts in the Hispanic/Latino community.

  • Developing relationships with community groups focused on the needs of the Hispanic/Latino community.
  • Serving as a liaison, as directed by the Coordinator, between the Hispanic/Latino community and the DHP.
  • Assisting, as directed by the Coordinator, in the development of a volunteer program to best meet the needs of the Hispanic/Latino community.
  • Facilitate patients (families) in certification/recertification for Medicaid or HealthChoice.

Developing relationships with DHP personnel who regularly interface with Hispanic/Latino patients.

  • Meeting the needs of DHP personnel on a consistent basis.
  • Working with staff to interpret medical, financial, and social information for Hispanic/Latino patients.

Provides age/developmental appropriate care in accordance with Age/Developmental Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served when interacting with patients' families.

  • Utilizing knowledge of age/developmental specific data (motor/sensory, mental, psychosocial, safety, and developmental norms) when interacting with patients, and performing duties or tasks.
  • Integrating knowledge of age/developmental specific care requirements while maintaining a safe environment.
  • Utilizing knowledge of age/developmental specific care requirements during an emergency response.
  • Utilizing communication skills in obtaining information, explaining instructions, and conveying patient needs sensitive to age and developmental level of the individual patient/family.
  • Maintaining competence related to age/developmental specific care requirements by regularly updating knowledge of growth and developmental, the aging process, and strategies to meet related needs.
