Manager, Patient Transportation

JOB SUMMARY: Provides administrative leadership to the 24/7 transportation operation of inpatients and outpatients throughout the Medical Center. Responsibilities include managing people, processes, and outcomes that support optimal functioning of the transportation department. Utilizes organizational technology to drive efficient utilization of resources. Analyzes and synthesizes system data to drive data based decisions. Manages departmental key performance indicators and proactively addresses outliers. Manages and drives improvements to customer service levels. Reviews and ensures compliance with all regulatory standards and internal policies.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:Bachelors' degree in Business Administration or related field of study plus three years of supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Healthcare experience preferred.

REPORTS TO: Director of Support Services, Resource Management

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Basic Cardiac Life Support, certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and OSHA training all required within 60 days.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Leads all aspects of Patient Transportation department operations; maintains qualified staff to meet transportation needs; responsible for recruiting, training, performance reviews and improvement plans for staff; coordinates orientation program and competency assessment; administers recurring in-service department meetings; manages department policies and procedures and oversees the communication of them to staff; provides routine and timely feedback to staff to promote staff development.
  2. Analyzes departmental data in Microsoft Excel; synthesizes data to determine relevant trends; develops data based decisions and presents trends, opportunities, and ideas to upper management; develops and manages key performance indicators, individual staff productivity and efficiency metrics; proactively addresses opportunities and indicator outliers.
  3. Develops, maintains and monitors processes for optimal delivery of transportation services; coordinates transportation activities with other disciplines and departments; maintains technical functionalities and facilitates implementation of necessary upgrades; orders and maintains equipment and supplies; ensures hallways and corridors are free from abandoned equipment in accordance with fire and regulatory policies; monitors and maintains safe environment for patients, guests and staff; proactively adjusts staffing to match transport volume.
  4. Ensures customer service expectations of patients, guests, physicians and colleagues are addressed and exceeded; clearly communicates customer service expectations to staff; solicits information from patients, guests and managers/staff in departments serviced pertaining to transportation; develops and implements strategies to enhance patient and guest experience.
  5. Ensures capital, salary and non-salary expense budgets meet transportation needs; develops, implements and monitors departmental budget; analyzes, reports, and presents budget variances.
  6. Ensures a cooperative work environment and productive professional relationships within the Medical Center; utilizes effective communication and positive interpersonal skills; provides comprehensive written communications; promotes climate of team building and peer support.
  7. Manages resources in a manner that enhances quality of patient transport; ensures compliance with all internal and external professional and regulatory agency standards; facilitates the development and managing of quality improvement programs; monitors compliance with standards of care; collaborates in multidisciplinary efforts to improve patient transport; evaluates activities to assure effective outcomes.
  8. Ensures the quality of professional services by updating knowledge and skills; maintains clinical expertise; attends workshops and other programs to enhance professional development; participates in approved professional activities.
  9. Protects self, co-workers, and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne disease(s) by: (1) Using work practice controls, engineering controls, or personal protective equipment appropriate for specific procedure(s); (2) averting, reporting and correcting potential exposure hazards. Recommends improved work practices, engineering controls, or personal protective equipment.
  10. Provides age/developmentally appropriate assistance in accordance with Age/Developmental Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served; demonstrates and utilizes knowledge of age/developmental specific data when assisting patients and guests and when performing tasks; documents response, and modifies approaches to assisting patients and guests; integrates knowledge of age/developmental specific care needs related to safety issues; utilizes knowledge of age/developmental specific care needs during an emergency response or when utilizing emergency equipment; utilizes communication skills in obtaining information, providing education, and conveying patient needs sensitive to age and development, the aging process, and strategies to meet related needs.
