Nursing Summer Extern Program
Join the real world of hospital nursing before you graduate! As a nursing extern at our hospital, you may continue your clinical studies in an accredited RN program during the summer between your junior and senior years. You must be listed as both Nurse Aide I with the NC Division of Health Services Regulation Health Care Personnel Registry Section and as a Nurse Aide II with the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Out of state students must complete a competency exam in North Carolina administered through NACES Plus Foundation in order to be listed as a Nurse Aide I with the NC Division of Facilities Services.

Our 10-week summer session begins each year in May. The program combines orientation activities, continuing education classes and an opportunity to work as a Nurse Aide II (see Scope of Practice for an NAII on the NC Board of Nursing website) in a medical/surgical specialty unit or in special care units such as burn unit, intermediate care, pediatrics, hematology/oncology, transplant unit, cardiology, renal, neurosurgery, emergency department, operating room, etc.
Your nursing experience will be under the supervision of a resource RN. All classes and clinical assignments are planned to assist you in making the best possible adjustment from the classroom to a professional nursing environment.

- Written list of personal objectives you feel the program can satisfy for you
- 2 letters of reference (at least one from a nursing instructor)
