32 hours per week, day shift.

Provides technical and operational support to the pharmacist to ensure that patients receive comprehensive pharmaceutical care. The primary responsibility of the infusion clinic pharmacy technician is to prepare and dispense medications, including cytotoxic and hazardous medications, for the cancer center infusion clinic in Elkin. Additional responsibilities include inventory control and ordering, stocking and routine cleaning of the pharmacy, assisting with inpatient and outreach clinic hazardous medication compounding as needed, charging for medication waste, and other duties as assigned by manager or area pharmacists.

The technician will use IV robotics and guided preparation technology to compound hazardous medications. The pharmacy takes many steps to reduce potential exposure to hazardous medications through environmental control, use of personal protection equipment, and use of a closed system transfer device (Phaseal). The technician will be expected to follow procedures to limit employee, guest, and their own risk of exposure.

Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building. Works cooperatively with others and directs daily workflow to optimize output. Provides pharmacy service to hematology oncology patients and excellent customer service to nurses, midlevels, and physicians in the clinic.

JOB SUMMARY:
Provides technical support to the pharmacist and operational support to pharmacists and technicians to ensure that patients receive comprehensive pharmaceutical care, appropriate to the age and severity of illness of the patient.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or equivalent
Completion of a formal technician training program with 1 year of pharmacy experience, specific to setting, or 2 years of experience with at least 1 year of pharmacy experience, specific to setting
Associates degree in a healthcare or business related field preferred.

REPORTS TO:
Pharmacy Operational Coordinator

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION and/or REGISTRATION:
North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration required within 30 days of employment.
PTCB technician certification (CPhT) required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
2. Works cooperatively with others and directs daily workflow to optimize output.
3. Serves as a mentor for new technicians.
4. Shares responsibility with pharmacists and managers for oversight of activities in the areas.
5. Assists the pharmacist and other technicians in preparing and processing medication orders/prescriptions.
6. Assumes responsibility for inventory maintenance to ensure that quality in-date drug products and supplies are available when needed.
7. Provides pharmacy service to the patient care areas.
8. Participates in the team approach to quality improvement to support the Pharmacy Department?s commitment to the philosophy and principles of Total Quality.
9. Maintains updated knowledge and skills and contributes to the education of others.
10. Provides age/developmentally appropriate care in accordance with Age Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.
11. Participates in planning processes by establishing personal goals to support quality improvement efforts and contribute to the achievement of departmental objectives.

Demonstrates the ability to perform all duties of Technician I.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Comfortable heat and light.
Noise generated from telephones, computers/printers, robot, hoods, and verbal communication.
May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases.
May be exposed to hazardous chemicals.
Possible exposure to the risk of bloodborne pathogens and/or airborne pathogens.
Possible exposure to latex.
Pressure due to multiple demands.
