WAKE FOREST INSTITUTE FOR REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

Full-time Regular, 40 hours/week

The Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) currently has an opening for a GMP technician to conduct project related activities for clinical products. A four year degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry or related field is required.

GMP LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II

FUNCTION OF JOB
Under direct supervision from a higher level technician or a principal investigator, perform a variety of moderately complex and generally standardized physical, chemical, or biological tests with procedures and techniques previously outlined by established protocols and other scientific data. Provide direction and guidance to lower classified personnel.

CHARACTERISTIC WORK
1. Manufacture materials for multiple Phase I and Phase II clinical trials in the GMP/GTP Facility, including, but not limited to, autologous cell therapy, wound healing bio-materials and scaffold-based organ regeneration, and tissue banking.
2. Optimize production processes including cell isolation and expansion, raw materials use testing, biomaterials manufacture and characterization and release criteria.
3. Plan and execute GMP/GTP Facility startup and maintenance under direction of facility management/Director of Manufacturing .
4. Document all activities within GMP/GTP Facility including clinical trial activities using FDA regulated Manufacturing Batch Records.
5. Review relevant FDA Code of Federal Regulation sections to demonstrate full GMP compliance.
6. Pass stringent FDA-mandated gowning and aseptic processing qualifications to verify skill level consistent with working in a GMP/GTP environment.
7. Inventory, order and catalog all requisite GMP/GTP Facility consumables, reagents, and portable equipment.
8. Supervise and train incoming staff on the entire range of GMP/GTP Facility duties.
9. Attend seminars, training sessions and workshops to maintain competency in evolving current GMP/GTP regulations.
10. Train on various analytical technologies such as fluorescent microscopy.
11. Maintain sterile environment in GMP/GTP setting by performing scheduled cleaning of all laboratory equipment.
12. Ensure GMP/GTP regulatory compliance via partnership with Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance and Quality Control personnel.
13. Support Facilities, Quality, IT, and Procurement activities required for GMP/GTP validation of equipment and processes.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
BS degree in Life Science or other related discipline

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
0-3+ years experience in cell and tissue culture
Excellent recordkeeping skills
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
Good computer skills
GLP/GMP experience preferred
Outstanding interpersonal skills and high energy

CHARACTERISTIC WORK

1. Conduct generally standardized chemical, physical, and biological tests on experimental/clinical materials; make micro-analysis, lipids analysis, enzyme studies, and chromatographic studies on various types of tissues, secretions, and excretions.

2. Setup equipment and organize materials used in performing scheduled tests, experiments, and/or operations.

3. Select the appropriate experimental/clinical format from established standard formats; prepare simple charts, graphs, and reports from data obtained during research experiments and observations of research subjects.

4. Isolate and identify various microorganisms through established laboratory techniques.

5. Train and demonstrate to graduate students, medical students, and other technical personnel, a variety of technical procedures.

6. Take blood samples, pressures, and other specimens and measurements as required by research/clinical protocols; inoculate research animals with various pathogens; perform minor animal surgery.

7. Collect tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis; obtain samples, prepare, mount, and stain tissue, blood, and other substances for microscopic examinations.

8. Review scientific journals, abstracts, and other publications for information applicable to research projects.

9. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

1. Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in biology, chemistry, zoology, or other science related to the assigned research field.

2. Graduation from high school and four years of related clinical/ research experience, whichever applicable for position to be filled.
