PEDIATRIC THERAPY PROGRAM - SPEECH PATHOLOGY

Full-time Regular, 40 hours/week

Dept: Otolaryngology/Hearing & Speech

Job Title: Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist

Job Summary:

Fulltime opening for an outpatient pediatric speech-language pathologist to provide high-quality evaluations and interventions to children with speech-language disorders, delays and disabilities. The chosen candidate will also provide clinical swallowing evaluations, modified barium swallow studies and dysphagia therapy. Potential to work with PMV candidates. The successful candidate will work as a team player within the department and actively involve families in their child's development through education on how to incorporate therapy goals into ADLs. The clinician will be expected assist in the training of student interns, residents, present in-services and participate in research upon request.

Education:

Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology

Experience:

Extensive experience working with the pediatric dysphagia population

3 years experience in outpatient pediatric or school setting preferred

Strong CF candidates may be considered

Licensure & Certification:

Current license or eligibility for licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists for Speech-Language Pathology

**Current Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology issued by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) **unless hired as a clinical fellow

Skills:

Strong interpersonal and diagnostic skills (verbal and written)

Clearly communicate evaluation findings, implications and treatment options to families

Individualize treatment program for each child, modifying therapy strategies as necessary to maximize progress

Experience in the evaluation and treatment of:

Dysphagia (clinical swallow evaluations and MBS)

Expressive and receptive language disorders

Articulation and motor speech disorders

Fluency/stuttering

Special Characteristics:

Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (BCS-S) preferred

Primary Accountabilities:

Performs comprehensive and professional clinical swallow evaluations, modified barium swallow studies and provides feeding/dysphagia therapy

Performs comprehensive and professional evaluations of pediatric patients referred for differential diagnosis of expressive and receptive language disorders, articulation or motor speech disorders and fluency

Selecting and administering evaluation instruments which are appropriate for the patient's age, developmental level, cognitive function, and reason for referral

Providing accurate data for differential diagnosis based upon test findings

Preparing written report of diagnostic findings in a timely manner for the referral source

Consulting with the referral source or participating in patient staffing with the referring physicians as necessary to facilitate best care and outcomes

Educates families on findings of evaluation and implication of results on treatment options/prognosis

Providing counseling to patient and extended family relative to recommendations and treatment options

Coordinating management recommendations with outside resources that will be participating in treatment and continuing care

Providing counseling to caregivers regarding treatment techniques and therapy carryover

Documenting above activities in patient's department chart and/or hospital medical record

Serves as speech pathology consultant to educational, medical, and other professional services

Participating as member of multidisciplinary teams in the medical center, as requires

Provides and participates in in-service education and training of speech pathology interns, medical students/residents, and allied medical personnel

Preparing and presenting formal lectures to physicians, nurses, educators, and others on communication and/or swallowing disorders

Providing unique training for speech pathology graduate interns who are assigned to the

department for clinical practicum training

Participating in in-service education programs to ensure proficiency and skills in current

Continuously seeks to improve patient care services and evaluates opportunities to develop new services

Job Summary:
Provides a full range of differential diagnostic and therapeutic services to outpatients of all ages who have central or peripheral disorders of speech, language, voice, cognition, and/or swallowing.

Education:
? Master?s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
? Master's Degree in Music or Vocal Performance.

Experience:
? Minimum one year clinical experience (two years preferred).
? Candidates with below minimum experience may be hired under provisions of Clinical Fellowship Year.

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration:
? Current license in Speech-Language Pathology issued by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists (or temporary license for employee in Clinical Fellowship Year).
? Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology issued by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association, or equivalent.

? Providing periodic re-evaluation to determine effectiveness of treatment and to updating treatment goals
? Participating in patient staffing with the attending/referring physician and colleagues.

5. Serves as speech pathology consultant to educational, medical, and other professional services
? Participating as member of multidisciplinary teams in the medical center, as required
? Assisting public schools in developing Individual Education Plans (IEP) for school-aged children, where appropriate and requested
? Assisting public school preschool programs in the evaluation of speech-language disorders and delays and in developing appropriate Individualized Family Service Plans [IFSP] (PL 99-457)
? Interacting with other outside agencies as appropriate (for example, Vocational Rehabilitation, Assistive Technology).

6. Provides and participates in inservice education and training of speech pathology interns, medical students/residents, and allied medical personnel

? Performing appropriate evaluation services to assess augmentative/alternative communication options or vocal prostheses.
? Instructing patient and family in the use of such devices; providing short-term therapy services with the device, if needed.
? Monitoring performance with fitted device.
? Providing re-evaluation services, as necessary, to change or upgrade devices.


9. Ensures age/developmentally appropriate patient care is provided in accordance with Age-Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.
? Demonstrating knowledge of physical, motor/sensory, mental, psychosocial, safety and developmental factors in the Age-Specific Care Guidelines.
? Ensuring the ongoing assessment, maintenance, and continual improvement of staff competence related to age-specific needs of patients.
? Utilizing communication skills in obtaining information, providing education and conveying patient needs sensitive to age and developmental level of the individual patient/family.
? Maintaining competence related to age-specific patient care by regularly updating knowledge of growth and development, the aging process and strategies to meet related needs.
