Do not use SAMe if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as furazolidone (Furoxone), isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur, leading to serious side effects.

S-adenosylmethionine is a naturally occurring chemical in the body.

S-adenosylmethionine (also called SAMe) has been used in alternative medicine as an aid to treating depression, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and liver problems.

How should I take SAMe?

Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra SAMe to make up the missed dose.

What should I avoid while taking s-adenosylmethionine?

Follow your healthcare provider's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity.

What are the possible side effects of s-adenosylmethionine?

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Less serious side effects may include:

  • headache, dizziness;
  • feeling anxious or nervous;
  • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain;
  • diarrhea, constipation;
  • increased sweating; or
  • sleep problems (insomnia).
