    True. Dietary fiber and some vitamins and minerals are lost in the refining process; also, many refined grains, when consumed beyond recommended levels, provide excess calories because they are high in solid fats and added sugars.

  8. True or False: Moderate alcohol consumption is defined as one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. People should drink moderately to take advantage of beneficial effects.

    False. Moderate alcohol consumption may have beneficial effects. Evidence shows it is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and with reduced risk of all-cause mortality among middle-aged and older adults, and that it may help to keep cognitive function intact with age.

    However, moderate alcohol consumption also is associated with increased risk of breast cancer, violence, drowning, and injuries from falls and motor vehicle crashes. It is not recommended that anyone begin drinking or drink more frequently on the basis of potential health benefits.
