Beginning to Exercise

Beginning to Exercise

A classic exercise regimen is composed of 3 exercise components:

Each component offers its own benefits and can be modified to fit almost any lifestyle.

When developing a program, it is important to remember the rules that each component follows in order to safely maximize your exercise time.

Before Changing Your Activity Level

Although most people can safely start and maintain an exercise program, it is always advisable before beginning a new exercise program to first contact your physician.

Always start an exercise program at a low level and progress slowly. If at any point in your exercise you develop any of the following symptoms, STOP exercising immediately:

  • Any form of chest discomfort
  • Discomfort in your neck, jaw, or arm
  • Lightheadedness
  • Unnatural sweating
  • Nausea
  • Marked shortness of breath

If your symptoms are not relieved in a few minutes, call 911. If the symptoms are relieved within a few minutes, call your doctor to report your symptoms.
