The world is full of sounds. Children use these sounds to learn about the world around them. When a child has difficulty hearing, some of the world’s sounds may be missed. Hearing loss in children can have many causes. Some types of hearing loss can be temporary, for example, when hearing loss is caused by an ear infection. Other types of hearing loss may be permanent. Learning about the type of hearing loss a child has is important in knowing how to best meet the child’s listening needs. Hearing can be tested at any age, even in newborn babies. This section will explain some of the different ways we test hearing in children.
