Regional Approach to
Cardiovascular Emergencies (RACE) at Wake Forest
Baptist Medical Center is a proud participant in the Regional Approach to
Cardiovascular Emergencies (RACE). This statewide study and initiative on treating heart
attack patients has successfully reduced the time it takes to unblock
coronary arteries in people having a heart attack.
The goals of
- Obtaining a
thorough read of electrical heart activity (electrocardiogram or EKG) within 10
minutes of a patient’s arrival to the Emergency Department
- Restoring blood
flow to blocked arteries through angioplasty & stenting or medications (thrombolytics)
deployment of Air Care emergency transport helicopters when appropriate
RACE is also starting a statewide focus on out-of-hospital cardiac
arrest (RACE-CARS). The mission of this project is to increase the survival
rate of cardiac arrest victims by 50 percent within five years.
