Preparing for Transition to ICD-10

Preparing for ICD-10

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is actively preparing for institution-wide conversion to ICD-10 diagnostic and treatment codes.

The new version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the accompanying procedure coding and billing system that is used to classify diseases and health conditions requires extensive training for clinicians, medical coders and others.

Developed in the 1970s, ICD code sets and terminology have been updated over the years to the current version, ICD-9-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification). Now considered out of date with current medical terminology and knowledge, it will be replaced with ICD-10-CM/PCS (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Clinical Modification/Procedure Coding System). ICD-10 has been adopted by many countries including the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Germany and Canada. For most industrialized nations, it is now the standard.

ICD-10-CM/PCS consists of two parts:

  • ICD-10-CM for diagnosis coding, designated for use in all U.S. health care settings
  • ICD-10-PCS for inpatient procedure coding, designated for use in U.S. inpatient hospital settings only

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has performed extensive organizational impact assessments and developed strategies for a smooth transition to ICD-10 and to ensure synergies with other federal mandates such as Meaningful Use of the Electronic Health Record.
