The Raby Family
As I sit here looking at my twins, Jillian and Julianna, it is hard to believe five months have gone by… well, actually it is hard to believe that they are mine at all! I had almost given up hope. After several years of trying to get pregnant on our own, my husband and I finally realized that we might need to see if there was a problem. My gynecologist talked with us about my options - a popular Charlotte office and about Dr. Yalcinkaya in Winston-Salem. As a nurse, I had heard about the Charlotte office and I had even been to the satellite office to observe for a day. That made my choice easy, we would try Dr. Yalcinkya in Winston-Salem.
After all this time, I cannot remember all the details, but the “nurse in me” knew if anyone could help us, it would be Dr. Yalcinkaya. With each meeting, Dr. Yalcinkaya was always so calmly confident and optimistic, which is exactly what I needed. Basically, after all the testing, we learned that my husband and I both had fertility issues to deal with. Even though I thought it was hopeless, Dr. Yalcinkaya never gave up and always encouraged us to continue to have intercourse at the appropriate time, just in case. He had much more hope than I did.
In short, we tried six IUI’s, which were unsuccessful, and three IVF procedures. Technically, all three of the IVF procedures worked, however, our first baby had severe birth defects. The second pregnancy miscarried rather quickly and Dr. Yalcinkaya felt there was possibly poor egg quality. He suggested an egg donor. I struggled with the decision - it wasn’t what I wanted to hear - but I did pick an egg donor on Christmas day.
By March 2009, I was pregnant. I was so happy, but guarded as always with my emotions. We quickly found out that we were expecting twins. As a nurse, I was very concerned since multiple births are always riskier. However, my husband was teetering between busting with excitement & joy and holding his head mumbling something about “two of everything”. I just kept telling myself it had to work, and we had to be OK.
And we are OK. We received amazing and excellent care from Dr. Yalcinkaya, and his entire office staff. Lori was our IUI and IVF Nurse and she was incredible. Patty was also extremely helpful because we had to figure out the costs and how insurance figured in. I know we bugged everyone over there all the time, but they were always so nice about it. I always felt like I had access to Dr. Yalcinkaya or Lori if we had a question or concern.
I know I made the right choice in choosing Dr. Yalcinkaya and his staff. When I first started going to Dr. Yalcinkaya, there were other critical care nurses that I worked with that were going to Charlotte and having no success at all. They were not only dissatisfied with their doctor and treatments, but with the office staff as well. At one point, my insurance actually would have covered the costs of the IVF procedure and medications, however it had to be done through the earlier mentioned Charlotte office. I felt it was better for us to continue with Dr. Yalcinkaya. I wasn’t getting any younger and I knew Dr. Yalcinkaya knew what he was doing. I never felt like a case file or number at his office.
So now we have two beautiful, healthy little girls and we can barely remember what life was like before they existed. We are so grateful to Dr. Yalcinkaya and to all of his staff. There is no way for us to truly express how grateful we are.
