Testing for Infection
What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?
Severe reproductive tract infections, also known as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), can be caused by microorganisms such as chlaymdia and gonorrhea. These infections can seriously damage the tubes, ovaries, uterus, and other organs within the pelvic cavity and can cause pelvic scarring or adhesions. PID is usually accompanied by pain and vaginal discharge.
How is PID diagnosed?
Cultures are usually taken to rule out the presence of infectious organisms during the infertility evaluation or prior to a procedure being performed.
