Alumni Remember

Diane Garrett

Every year at the end of October alumni of Wake Forest School of Medicine, formerly Bowman Gray School of Medicine, come back to Winston-Salem to celebrate and reunite!

But there was a sad reunion in October 1996, following the tragic death of Diane Garrett. Mrs. Garrett, director of Alumni Affairs from 1994-1996, died in a weather-related car accident in February 1996. After working in advertising for radio and television, she came to the medical school in 1991.

Her supervisor and vice president/association dean for Development and Alumni Affairs Michael J. Poston said at the time of her death: Diane was a tremendous individual in every respect and gave more than 100 percent to everything.

Family and friends created a college scholarship trust fund in memory of Mrs. Garrett. The funds were to insure that her high school daughter, Stacy, received higher education.

Mrs. Garrett is pictured here in fall 1994, ensuring that alumni have a special reunion! Her photograph is now housed in the Dorothy Carpenter Medical Archives, along with many other historical materials.
