Incoming House Officers

This page is for new House Staff beginning work in 2013

In order for you to begin your residency/fellowship at the Medical Center, you must hold current American Heart Association (AHA) course completion cards as follows:

Family Medicine and Anesthesiology: BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP
Emergency Medicine: BLS, ACLS, and PALS
Surgical Specialties: BLS and ACLS (PALS and NRP are strongly recommended.)
Pediatrics: BLS, PALS, and NRP
OB/GYN: BLS, ACLS and NRP
Pathology: BLS (ACLS is strongly recommended)
All other residencies/fellowships: BLS and ACLS

Abbreviations Key:
ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support
BLS - Basic Life Support (CPR)
PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support
NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Program

PLEASE NOTE: ACLS is NOT a substitution for BLS. If you already hold an ACLS card, it does not mean you are already current in BLS. You must have a BLS card as well.

Options for completing these courses:

1. Prior to arrival: You may complete one or more of these courses prior to your arrival at the Medical Center. You must still complete the registration form below even if you do not plan on attending our courses. If you choose to meet these requirements prior to arrival, be very cautious of online courses. There are several courses on the web that are not valid. Only courses purchased directly from the American Heart Association are accepted. Call Billy Haynes (336-716-2005) with e-learning questions.

2. E-Learning: You may register for one or more of the e-learning courses to be held here at the Medical Center prior to orientation. We will offer e-learning options for BLS, ACLS, and PALS. You will complete the e-learning portion at your convenience during the 60 days prior to orientation. You will schedule yourself to complete the skills portion just prior to orientation and you can even complete the skills for all three of these courses on the same day!

3. Traditional Courses: You may register for one or more of the courses to be taught in a traditional classroom format prior to orientation here at the Medical Center. We will offer traditional options for PALS.

4. NRP: Participants must complete the NRP exam online prior to coming to class. Upon payment for the course, participants will be directed to a website to take this exam. Prior to taking the exam, participants should read the comprehensive instructional textbook, which includes an interactive multi-media CD-ROM, and complete the reviews at the end of each lesson.

*The online test is challenging, and preparation (reading the book) is important if you want to be successful.
*Extra Exam Attempts: $16 - Note: If you fail your first attempt, each extra attempt will cost an additional $16
.
*For any technical issues that come up while completing the NRP online test, please contact HealthStream Customer Support at: 1-800-521-0574 (selection #3), or email: nrponline@healthstream.com.
