International Trauma Life Support / Pediatric Trauma Life Support
Pediatric ITLS


This one-day course, sponsored by Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma, Triad RAC and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is designed to teach all levels of EMS personnel including first responders, EMTs, paramedics, trauma nurses, emergency nurses, and emergency physicians the skills necessary to recognize mechanisms of injury, assess and perform critical interventions, then package and transport the injured infant or child. Pediatric ITLS uses principles of prehospital trauma care and refines them for specific use on infants and children. These same principles apply for children being transferred from a primary hospital to a tertiary care facility.
Fee: $50 (NCBH Employees)
$0 NC EMS Providers - $50 deposit required (check or cash only) under the provisions of a grant from the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma. Your deposit will be refunded if you (or an approved substitute) attend the course. Any participant who registers and does not attend the course (No Show) will forfeit his/her deposit.
Prerequisites
Reading the Pediatric ITLS text and completing the pretest for the course is required. It is highly recommended that students have previously completed an ITLS, PHTLS, or PALS course. Upon completing course registration requirements, Life Support Education staff will provide you with appropriate study materials.
Course Completion
Successful completion requires a score of at least 74% on the written evaluation as well as successful completion of the patient assessment testing stations. Basic personnel (MR & EMT) will take a basic written exam and will only perform the basic level skills in their testing stations. Advanced personnel will take an advanced level written exam and will perform at the advanced level in the testing stations.

Pediatric ITLS Instructor Course
This four-hour course, sponsored by Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma, Triad RAC, NC Office of EMS, and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is designed to prepare Pediatric ITLS providers that performed exemplary in their PITLS provider course the skills necessary to become a PITLS Instructor.
NOTE: There are no fees for EMS Providers to attend this course! All course fees and instructor books are provided under the provisions of a grant from the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma. Instructor books will be distributed at the conference.
Prerequisites
Participants must provide a copy of their current PITLS Provider card that indicates they scored IP (Instructor Potential) during their provider course. Instructor Potential is awarded to students that achieve a written exam score of 90 or higher and a patient assessment score of excellent. Participants that score IP in the PITLS provider course on Saturday, October 1, 2011 will be allowed to register for the instructor course at that time.
Course Completion
Successful completion requires satisfactory participation in the instructor course. Instructor candidates must then be monitored teaching a lecture, skill and patient assessment station at a Pediatric ITLS provider course.

ITLS (International Trauma Life Support)
This two-day course is designed for trauma care providers who are the first to assess and initiate treatment for the trauma patient. This combined basic and advanced class is appropriate for all levels of EMS personnel including Medical Responders, EMTs, paramedics, trauma nurses, emergency nurses, and emergency physicians. It includes complete training for the skills needed for rapid assessment, resuscitation, stabilization and transport of trauma patients.
Fee: $145 (Non-NCBH Employees)
$75 (NCBH Employees)
$65 (Code 44 Team Members)
Prerequisites
Reading the ITLS text and completing the pretest for the basic or advanced course is required. It is recommended that you have a basic understanding of pre-hospital trauma care.
