Dialysis Access Center
Thousands of patients every year entrust their dialysis treatment to nephrologists at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, assured of the most advanced and accessible care. Not only does the Medical Center own and operate several outpatient dialysis facilities across northwestern North Carolina -- one of the nation’s largest university-run programs, we are also one of the first academic medical centers in the U.S. to offer procedures to maintain dialysis vascular access on an outpatient basis. More than 2,000 vascular access procedures have been performed at our Dialysis Access Center (wakehealth.edu/dialysis-access-group) since its inception in January 2007.
The Nephrology team at Wake Forest Baptist includes one interventional nephrologists, Dr. Shahriar Moossavi. Fewer than a dozen academic medical centers in the U.S. offer the services of this relatively new specialty.
Dialysis vascular access management requires multi-disciplinary approach. Wake Forest Baptist interventional nephrologists help coordinate the vascular access monitoring and maintain long-term access patency to reduce hospital visits and number of missed dialysis treatments.
The Dialysis Access Center is also actively involved in clinical research and is currently studying role of catheter design in recirculation rate during dialysis treatments.
