Neurology and Neurosurgery Highlights

Stroke

In 2014, Wake Forest Baptist became 1 of 103 medical centers nationwide and 1 of only 4 statewide to be designated as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. The Stroke Center operates the Wake Forest Baptist Telestroke Network, providing expert stroke assessment and consultation in remote areas where smaller hospitals lack 24/7 neurological coverage.

Epilepsy

The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center is among the top-rated epilepsy programs in the United States and one of the few Epilepsy Centers in the Southeast to have met the Level IV guidelines of the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.

MEG

We are home to North Carolina’s only MEG (magnetoencephalography), a noninvasive diagnostic tool that pinpoints brain activity centers and helps ensure the greatest precision in neurosurgical planning. Pediatric and adult epilepsy programs are utilizing laser based technology for epilepsy surgeries.

Spine

Neurosurgeons at Wake Forest Baptist's Spine Center conduct minimally invasive surgeries for spinal conditions that have been modeled throughout the world.

ALS

The ALS Center at Wake Forest Baptist – one of only 34 in the United States – provides exceptional care for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and engages in cutting-edge research and translational science.

Focused Ultrasound

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is the only health system in the Triad that offers focused ultrasound - an incision-free procedure that can improve tremor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease and essential tremors in just a few hours.

Gamma Knife

Neurology and neurosurgery has one of the nation’s most experienced Gamma Knife treatment teams for noninvasive treatment of certain brain tumors and abnormalities, as well as the most advanced, next-generation technology: the Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™.

Deep Brain Stimulation

The Movement Disorders Center at Wake Forest Baptist has one of the most experienced deep brain stimulation teams in the nation. We were among the first centers in the nation to perform DBS surgery, in 1997. Since then, hundreds of patients have undergone DBS surgery.

Neuro ICU

The Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit, a state-of-the-art, 24-bed unit, specializes in the care of patients recovering from complicated neurological and neurosurgical conditions as well as post-operative neurosurgical care.

Pediatrics

The pediatric neurology section has 6 full-time faculty members, 3 with specialty training in epilepsy and 1 with additional training in headache.

Neurosurgery is proud to have 2 board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeons. The department also offers a pediatric sleep lab for pediatric patients.
