Pediatric

Application Process

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Neurology Residency Program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.  We offer an accredited program steeped in educational excellence and exposure to all aspects of neurologic care and research.  The pediatric neurology program utilizes the expertise of personnel from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and North Carolina Baptist Hospital.

We offer one pediatric neurology residency positions per year.  The residency is a three year categorical program that includes a PGY-1 & 2 year in the Department of Pediatrics at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.   A separate interview with the Department of Pediatrics is not required; however, you are required to apply using ERAS for your Pediatric preliminary training.  You will have an opportunity to meet with the program director as part of your Pediatric Neurology interview schedule.

The Child Neurology Society http://www.childneurologysociety.org/careers/training decided at their spring meeting to use National Residency Match Program  (NRMP) http://www.nrmp.org/  for the match this year.  However, the transition from SF Match has not been completed and we have not been notified about how the applications will be process.

The NRMP will open its registration on September 1.  Be sure to register with them for the Match in March, 2012.

A formal agreement has been reached with ERAS allowing Child Neurology/NDD to utilize their application forms. However, for a variety of reasons beyond our control, this year only, all completed applications for the March 2012 Child Neurology/NDD match will need to be forwarded to the Association of University Professors of Neurology (AUPN) for processing.

Application forms via ERAS become available July 1, 2011.

Applicants applying for Pediatrics beginning in 2012 and Child Neurology beginning in 2014 and using ERAS 2012 should copy their completed My ERAS application and mail a hard copy to the AUPN. Please visit the AUPN website at www.aupn.org   for complete instructions. Applicants who are not using ERAS 2012 (i.e., not applying for a pediatric residency) should access the My ERAS application worksheet at https://www.aamc.org/download/139512/data/worksheet.pdf . This application should be completed, printed, and forwarded to the AUPN.

Please visit the AUPN website at www.aupn.org    for complete instructions.

Each application must contain three letters of recommendation in addition to the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (the Dean’s Letter) which will become available from your school through the SF Match system on November 1st. The minimum USMLE score to be considered for an interview is generally a 3-digit score of 195.  Foreign medical graduates must have passed the ECFMG and USMLE exams.  Step 1 is required at the time of your application.  Step 2 usually is taking toward the end of your 4th year and isn’t always available when you are applying.  Additional information may be obtained by visiting the ECFMG website.   Based upon the strength of the overall application, some candidates with lower USMLE scores may be considered as well.    In addition, international medical graduates must have some amount of clinical medical experience in the United States or Canada, preferably of at least a year, to be considered for an interview.  Not all applicants are invited for an interview, but the most competitive candidates will be invited for a formal interview.

Applications will be reviewed as they become available and candidates will be invited in the order they are received and reviewed. The deadline for the application to be received is November 1st.  Applicants are encouraged to complete their application as soon as possible since earlier invitations to interview will allow for greater flexibility in scheduling and there are limited interview slots available.  Some applications have been delayed in being reviewed because they are missing key components such as letters of recommendation or scores.

Thank you again for your interest in our program.  If you have any specific questions not covered above, please feel free to contact Diann Holland, Residency Program Coordinator, at dholland@wakehealth.edu.

Sincerely,

Annette Grefe, M.D.
Director, Residency Training Program
